I will discuss what it means for the zero set of a polynomial in several variables to be rational, as well as an open problem regarding cubic polynomials.

We review properties of varieties generated by finite simple algebras, their subvarieties and free objects. In particular we show that every congruence modular variety that is generated by a finite nonabelian simple algebra has a unique maximal subvariety.
