You likely know of probability distributions and you may even know of distributions from analysis (or generalized functions) but did you know differential geometry also has distributions? Distributions are subbundles of the tangent bundle to a manifold and such objects encode all kinds of interesting geometry. We’ll introduce the notion of distributions, their counterpart exterior differential systems, and the Frobenius theorem (also of the third kind?). From there we’ll explore ways in which the Frobenius theorem fails and what kinds of geometry this puts us in contact with.
