In physics, the divergent sums and appear in the study of the Casimir effect, which is the existence of an attractive force between two parallel conducting plates in vacuum. Curiously, the experimental results agree with the ad-hoc assumption that these divergent series converge to the Riemann-zeta function evaluated at and , respectively. In this talk, we will explore some summation methods that assign values to divergent series, and introduce a general algebraic framework that unifies the various summation methods.
