I will compare and contrast the congruence lattices of the following:
- the symmetric group (folklore); - the full transformation monoid (an old result of Malcev); - the partition monoid and its significant submonoids (diagram monoids) - recent results with East, Mitchell and Torpey and with East.
In Part 1 I will talk about the finite case, and in part 2 the infinite.
