In honor of pi day we will discuss where pi lives. Namely, we shall show that pi is neither rational nor algebraic. Along the way we will consider the history of transcendental numbers. Our journey will be motivated by problems, some solved and some not. The requisite background is a partial understanding of one’s own lack of understanding of the sets of numbers we generally like to play with.

Dynamical systems were introduce by Poincaré in his study of the behavior of the solar system. I will discuss a number of dynamical systems coming from linear algebra and calculus before moving to an introduction to shift spaces and their dynamics. The concept of sensitivity to initial conditions will be emphasized.
