Traditional classroom formats, dominated by lecture and at the whims of content-cramming tempos, often stifle what we love most about mathematics and the skills mathematicians value. On the other hand, Inquiry-Based Learning (IBL) approaches introduce mathematics to students as a living, breathing organism, where success is measured by struggle, creativity, and hard work. Teachers and students act as facilitators and apprentices rather than dispensers and consumers, and in-class activities are student-centered, involving group-work and presentations. In this interactive session, we'll discuss IBL, and I'll share my experience from the IBL workshop I attended last summer. Participants will leave with a basic understanding of IBL and some ideas for implementing IBL practices in their classrooms.
