In this talk, we explore how similar ideas appear in different areas of mathematics. One of those recurring themes is the notions of convolution and the Fourier transform which originated in the context of analysis. We will see how these ideas appear in computing, representation theory, algebraic geometry, and category theory. Since these ideas appear at different levels of abstraction, we will be able to examine the power and limitations of abstraction in mathematics.
