In preparation to begin studying the notes of Steinberg on Chevalley groups, Breeann will discuss the representation theory of simple Lie algebras. By the end of the talk, we hope to understand how every irreducible representation of a given simple Lie algebra is determined by a highest weight vector and that these are in correspondence to the (non-negative) integral span of certain fundamental weights.
Everyone is invited to a problem session on Tuesday, February 15, in which we will continue looking at some of the specific examples of Lie algebras seen up to this point. We will also classify and construct the irreducible representations of sl(2,C).

This talk will be the first in a series discussing KK-theory. We will follow Kasparov's paper "Equivariant KK-theory and the Novikov conjecture". In addition to organizing some of the future talks, I will discuss analytic K-homology as a warm up to Kasparov's bivariant theory.
