Let be conjugacy classes of a simple algebraic group defined over a sufficiently large field . We consider the following question: what are necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of a tupleĀ $(x_1,\ldots,x_e)\in C_1\times\ldots\times C_e$ such that $\langle x_1,\ldots,x_e\rangle$ is Zariski dense in $G(k)$? A solution to this problem has several applications, including generic stabilizers in linear representations of algebraic groups, and random generation of finite groups of Lie type. Results and outstanding cases are discussed. Some work in this talk is joint with Robert Guralnick and Tim Burness.
