ODEs (ordinary differential equations) and PDEs (partial differential equations) are frequently viewed as being a rather “applied” subject in mathematics. In this talk I’ll give some basic background on differential equations and then move onto how differential equations have either helped solved problems in other pure fields of math or how the study of particular types of differential equations have helped kickstart seemingly unrelated areas of research. Specific areas I plan on mentioning will be number theory, lie algebra, algebraic geometry, topology, differential geometry and possibly others!

From Xeno's Paradox about Achilles and the Tortoise to the Banach-Tarski Paradox, the concept of "infinity" has raised some serious problems in mathematics and philosophy. We will explore the different concepts of "infinity" in mathematics and philosophy through examples and the mind-bending implications these have.
