Drs. Kutzko, Haas, and Helminck will talk about their efforts to increase the numbers of women and members of traditionally underrepresented minority groups in their institutions. Dr. Kutzko founded the National Alliance for Doctoral Studies in Mathematics and has won awards for his work at the University of Iowa, and Dr. Helminck, another leader in the National Alliance, has played a transformative role at North Carolina State University. Dr. Haas is one of the founders of the Smith College Mathematics Postbaccalaureate program, which helps serves as a bridge between undergraduate and graduate programs in mathe- matics for members of tradiationally underrepresented groups. Dr. Willis will discuss her experiences in the University of Iowa Ph.D. program, where she entered the program as a student without as much background in mathematics as most of her peers, and left with an NSF postdoctoral fellowship.
