Mastery-based testing is an assessment style that challenges students to provide complete solutions to problems derived from clear course concepts. Students are allowed multiple attempts to demonstrate mastery with no penalty for failed attempts. I argue that mastery-based exams encourage sustained progress toward thorough understanding as compared with traditional points-based exams. Moreover, I believe they offer increased equity with respect to student experience in previous mathematics courses. We will conclude with brief guidelines on how you can easily implement mastery-based exams in your existing courses.
