By examining the classical homotopy theory of topological spaces and identifying the key features that make it work, we can abstract those features to arrive at the notion of a model category, which allows us to do homotopy theory in an abstract setting. In this talk we will see several examples of model categories and what we can do with them, from topological spaces to homological algebra.
