Rob Tubbs (CU Boulder) An absurdist look at the nature of some peculiar decimals
The Steenrod algebras are graded Hopf algebras over fields of prime order which arise in the study of topological invariants of spaces. The goal of this talk will be to learn just enough about homological algebra and the Steenrod algebra generated by the Steenrod squares over everyone's favourite two element field to play a little game using diagrammatic representations of Steenrod submodules.
As an introduction to an important branch of number theory, diophantine approximation, we will examine several real numbers and show that they are irrational. We will also discuss whether they are surds, which are irrational numbers that are roots of rational numbers.
