University of Colorado Department of Mathematics Colloquium
The Kempner Colloquium meets Tuesdays from 12:10-12:50 PM in MATH 350.
The Kempner Colloquium began in 1963 in honor of Professor Aubrey J. Kempner who served as head of the Mathematics Department from 1925 until he retired in 1949. Kempner gave the inaugural lecture in the colloquium on Reminiscences of the University of Goettingen, where he had received his Ph.D. degree under Edmund Landau in 1911. Kempner's research was primarily in the field of number theory. He served as the president of the MAA from 1937-38. Kempner continued to take an active interest in the department until his death in 1973.
The Kempner Colloquium Endowment was established in 1995 with generous gifts of the faculty, the College of Arts and Sciences, and University of Colorado Mathematics alumni, including a major gift from Dr. William J. LeVeque (B.A. 1944).
The colloquium is currently being organized by Peter Mayr and Sean O'Rourke.
