Some watercolor paintings 2007.
Last revised October, 2007.
Some studio works, some plein-air. Most are pure transparent
watercolor, but there are a couple of spots of gouache on the
Thompson series.

Rio Chama, New Mexico,
May, 2007
The Chama rises in southern Colorado (many of its
branches, anyway), and flows south to join the Rio
Grande at Espanola. On this visit, I was staying in
Cooper's Cabins at El Vado Ranch, just below El Vado Dam.
One can see a good stream flow in these pictures.
There are large glacial moraines along the river in this area;
must be left over from the Rio Grande Glacier. The picture
on the right shows my painting spot in the campground
there.
Larimer County, CO, April-October, 2007
Just north of Boulder county, near Lyons. The
Little
Thompson River
is a beautiful small river flowing east out of the
lower mountains for twenty miles, until joining the
Big Thompson, and soon thereafter the South Platte. It is undammed,
and there is no road along it, so it is very unspoiled..
One of the most beautiful river spots I have ever been to.
I don't know all the local geology, but the the orange-red
rock must surely be Lyons sandstone (280 million years ago).
This river has no public access besides a couple of
bridges across, so it is hard to visit.
I am grateful to two friends who own the land depicted
here, and who graciously invited me to spend as much time
as I wished to enjoy and soak in the landscape.
From left to right, these pictures progress through the
seasons. The first two are from a day in late April (too
chilly for plein-air painting). The third is from early
June, and the next two are from late June. The final picture
is from mid-October.
The first scene is near the upstream (west) end of the
property, looking upstream, and the last one is near the
downstream end of the property, looking downstream. The
others are in-between, looking north from the south bank,
so that the river is flowing from left to right in the
picture.
Monhegan Island, Maine, July, 2007
We're ten miles out into the Atlantic here,
looking out to the east, in the general direction
of Ireland. The birds in the second painting are eiders,
a species of duck. They really do frolic in the
surf. Sometimes the ducklings follow in a line like
this; sometimes everybody goes fishing on their own.
Red Rock Lake, Colorado, September, 2007
See
2003,
2004,
2005,
2005 and
2006 for
further painting of the lake. Notice how the
water lilies (nuphar) have been taking over the
lake. Two moose were spotted in the lake this month.
Perhaps they will eat away some of the lilies.
Switzerland Trail, Boulder County, September, 2007
