The first --upstream -- was done my last morning, rather quickly
on a small piece of paper. The second is a studio
work, done from the first and a photograph. As for
the third, across and downstream, this large scene, with reflections
from sun-red rocks, has fascinated me, and I have tried
it several times. (See
2004
and 2006 below.) The play of the sun is more vivid than
a photograph will reveal. I have concluded that (for me) it is
too complicated to finish on site. The scene here
is a small, somewhat abstract, studio work.

These were on a hike through the National Seashore, from
Seal Rock to China Beach. I carried only a smaller piece
of paper, and it was quite cold, with lots of fog, so
things didn't really gel. But one can get the idea. That
is Angel Island beyond the bridge. The higher parts of
the bridge and the Marin Headlands are obscured by fog.

More of the same - one upstream, one across, and three downstream.
First two are morning, last three late afternoon. All but
the second were done at home after returning.

Three shots looking east (toward Copper Harbor), then
two looking west. The beach is a giant pile of glacially
polished stone, of many sizes, most of them red. I wish I
could paint every stone on the beach!
We're staying at Sunset Bay. The final image is one
of the many sunsets for which it is named. Fabulous
night after night. Needless to say, this is a studio
work made from a photograph. (A photo is not really
necessary - anything and everything does happen in
their sunsets.) I have a lot more sunset photos, and
may someday make more paintings.
