Missed Exams and Assignments

You may miss an examination or assignment only in the case of an emergency or an approved accommodation. More details below.

Acceptable Use of AI in This Class

It is acceptable to use AI in this class to help you learn the material. It is unacceptable to use AI to help you complete any assignment, unless you are given written permission from me for the specific assignment. For instance, if I have not given you written permission for the specific assignment, then asking AI to help find, draft, check, or improve a solution to a homework, quiz, or examination question is not acceptable and will be considered cheating.

Academic Misconduct

Students whom I determine have cheated will, on a first offense, receive a zero for the assignment and have their course letter grade reduced by a full letter grade. On a second offense, the course grade will be an F. This policy, as with all course policies, may be changed at any time for any reason.

Honor Code

All students enrolled in a University of Colorado Boulder course are responsible for knowing and adhering to the Honor Code. Violations may include but are not limited to plagiarism, cheating, fabrication, lying, bribery, threat, unauthorized access to academic materials, clicker fraud, submitting the same or similar work in more than one course without permission from all instructors involved, and aiding academic dishonesty. Understanding the course syllabus is a vital part of adhering to the Honor Code.

All incidents of academic misconduct will be reported to Student Conduct & Conflict Resolution at StudentConduct@colorado.edu. Students found responsible will receive resolution outcomes from Student Conduct & Conflict Resolution and may also receive further academic sanctions from the faculty member. See the Honor Code for more information.

Accommodation for Disabilities, Temporary Medical Conditions, and Medical Isolation

If you qualify for accommodations because of a disability, submit your accommodation letter from Disability Services within the first two weeks of class (or the date you receive your accomodation letter) so that your needs can be addressed. Disability Services determines accommodations based on documented disabilities in the academic environment. Information on requesting accommodations is available from Disability Services, 303-492-8671, DSinfo@colorado.edu.

For a temporary medical condition, see Temporary Medical Conditions. If a temporary illness, injury, or required medical isolation requires an adjustment, notify me as soon as possible. You are not required to disclose the nature of the illness or supply a doctor’s note.

Accommodation for Religious Obligations

Campus policy requires reasonable accommodations when religious obligations conflict with scheduled examinations, assignments, or required attendance. Communicate the need for an accommodation within the first two weeks of class, so that an alternative arrangement can be made. See the campus policy regarding religious observances.

Preferred Student Names and Pronouns

CU Boulder recognizes that students’ legal information does not always align with how they identify. To have a preferred name and/or preferred pronouns appear on class rosters and in Canvas, see the Registrar’s instructions.

Classroom Behavior

Students and faculty are responsible for maintaining an appropriate learning environment in all instructional settings, whether in person, remote, or online. Professional courtesy and sensitivity are especially important with respect to individuals and topics dealing with race, color, national origin, sex, pregnancy, age, disability, creed, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, veteran status, marital status, political affiliation, or political philosophy.

See the Student Classroom and Course-Related Behavior Policy, the Student Code of Conduct, and the Office of Institutional Equity and Compliance.

Sexual Misconduct, Discrimination, Harassment, and Related Retaliation

CU Boulder is committed to an inclusive and welcoming learning, working, and living environment. University policy prohibits protected-class discrimination and harassment, sexual misconduct, intimate partner abuse, stalking, and related retaliation by or against members of the community on and off campus. Individuals who have been subjected to misconduct may contact the Office of Institutional Equity and Compliance (OIEC) at 303-492-2127 or OIEC@colorado.edu. Information about policies, reporting options, and confidential support resources is available on the OIEC website.

Faculty and graduate instructors are required to inform OIEC when made aware of incidents related to these concerns, regardless of when or where they occurred, so that the person impacted can receive information about resolution options and support resources. See Don’t Ignore It for more information.

Mental Health and Wellness

The University of Colorado Boulder is committed to the well-being of all students. If personal stressors, mental health concerns, or substance-use concerns are affecting academic or daily life, contact Counseling and Psychiatric Services (CAPS), located in C4C, or call 303-492-2277, 24 hours a day.

More details on all of the policies above are spelled out here.
