Title: A locally finite maximal cofinitary group. Speaker: Bart Kastermans Affiliation: CU Time: 3pm, Monday, September 21 Location: Math 220 Abstract: A cofinitary group is a subgroup of the symmetric group on the natural nubmers where all nonidentity members have only finitely many points. Maximal such groups have long been studied with methods derived from the study of maximal almost disjoint families. The resulting groups then are always free groups. Here we explain the question on different isomorphism types, and outline our proof that under Martin's Axiom there exists a locally finite maximal cofinitary group. Title: Residually finite varieties of Lie algebras. Speaker: Kearnes Affiliation: CU Time: 3pm, Monday, September 28 Location: Math 220 Abstract: I'll discuss the theorem that any residually finite variety of Lie algebras is generated by a finite Lie algebra. Title: Overcoming G\o"del: Turing's Pi-0-1 Completeness Theorem. Speaker: Everett Piper Affiliation: CU Time: 3pm, Monday, November 9 Location: Math 220 Abstract: By iterating the Uniform Reflection Principle over PA, a proof of any true Pi-0-1 sentence of number theory can be found! |
