Title: Some problems concerning subalgebras of Boolean algebras Speaker: Don Monk Affiliation: CU Time: 3pm, Monday, September 22 Location: Math 220 Abstract: Title: Free spectra Speaker: Keith Kearnes Affiliation: CU Time: 3pm, Monday, September 29 Location: Math 220 Abstract: An equationally defined class V of algebras contains free algebras of all ranks. We discuss the possible growth rates of the function Spec(n) = | F_V(n) |, which measures the size of these algebras. Title: Kurepa families and a topological and Boolean algebra equivalence Speaker: Peter Nyikos Affiliation: University of South Carolina Time: 3pm, Monday, November 10 Location: Math 220 Abstract: A Kurepa family is a collection of countable sets such that there are only countably many sets of the form A&capB inside each member A of the family. A Kurepa family is called cofinal if it is cofinal in the collection of all countable subsets of its union. This talk gives some applications of Kurepa families to topology, analysis and algebra, and shows how the existence of a cofinal Kurepa family on the real line (equivalently, of a certain kind of Boolean algebra or locally metrizable space) is tied up with some very large cardinal axioms. |
