Speaker:  Keith Kearnes
Affiliation:  CU
Time:  3pm, Monday, September 17
Location:  Math 220

Abstract:
This will be a learning seminar based on the book Groups of Finite Morley Rank by Borovik and Nesin. This first talk is on Morley's 1965 paper.

Title:  MV-algebras and lattice-ordered groups.
Speaker:  Charles Holland
Affiliation:  CU
Time:  3pm, Monday, October 1
Location:  Math 220

Abstract:
Boolean Algebras are the algebras of propositions for classical two-value logic where every proposition has truth value 0(="false") or 1(="true"). MV-algebras are the algebras of propositions for multi-valued logic where each proposition has a truth value in the real interval [0,1]. Lattice-ordered groups are the algebras arising from the notion of "quantity" or "size".

I will discuss the more than 100-year histories of MV-algebras and lattice-ordered groups, and the recent discoveries of the intimate connection between the two subjects.
