S. V. Polin constructed a variety P of algebras with nonmodular congruence lattices which nevertheless do satisfy a nontrivial lattice equation, solving an old problem. This is the congruence lattice of the free algebra in P on one generator. If K is a variety with nonmodular congruence lattices then the congruence lattices of K generate a variety containing the lattice above.
