The first is to learn basic mathematical skills necessary in business, finance, and in every branch of the sciences. (Chaps. 1-5, half of Chap. 9.) The second is to practice and develop problem-solving abilities, including: overcoming intimidation, translating problems into mathematical statements, solving, and expressing methods and solutions in ordinary language. Prerequisites: You are expected to have had two years of high school algebra or Math 102, and one year of high school geometry. Credit: Math 111 does not count toward a degree in mathematics. If a student takes Math 190 (Precalculus), then the student gets no credit for having taken Math 111. Finally, Math 111 or its equivalent is required for students who want to take Math 205 (Calculus I). Homework, Quizzes and Exams: During the semester you will be expected to complete regularly assigned homework, 11 short quizzes, 3 fifty minute tests, and a final exam. Scoring: Written work will be judged on the basis of completeness, legibility and correctness. Strings of formulas without explanation will not be accepted.
