SUMMARY:Auditing Complex Ranked-Choice Elections
LOCATION:Math 350
DESCRIPTION:View online: https://cuboulder.zoom.us/j/91062572200\n\nRanked-choice voting is commonplace in some parts of the world\, but first-past-the-post is the dominant system used in the United States. There is growing support for ranked-choice voting across the US\, including for proportional systems like the Single Transferable Vote. One roadblock for increased uptake of such voting systems is their auditability. The majority of US states require some kind of post-election tabulation audit prior to certifying the election outcome. Auditors will collect a random sample of cast paper ballots\, interpret the votes on those ballots\, and use these interpretations to check the result of the computerised voting system. A risk-limiting audit (RLA) is a kind of post-election tabulation audit that limits the maximum probability of failing to detect an incorrect election outcome. Recent research has demonstrated that we can successfully and reliably conduct RLAs for ranked-choice elections. This talk will discuss the progress we have made toward RLAs for the Single Transferable Vote and what this means for US elections.
