My goal will be to explain why a locally finite variety $\mathcal{V}$ has the property that its finitely generated projective algebras are free if and only if (1) the finite, nontrivial members of $\mathcal{V}$ are E-minimal and (2) if $\mathcal{V}$ has a pseudoconstant term, then $\mathcal{V}$ also has a constant term.
