SEATTLE (AP) - The Seattle Rainiers have never been so happy to get on an airplane. In their first must-win game of the year, Jean-Sebastien Giguere posted his first career postseason shutout (twenty-nine saves, 1/1 GR) and sophomore Dany Heatley had two goals and an assist as the Rainiers knocked off the North Calgary Hawks, 3-0, to win Game Five of their Western Conference Semifinal Series. Playing on a "checking line" with Kirk Maltby and Mike Fisher, Heatley did his part to hold the Hawks' top line, then potted his tenth of the playoffs 14:08 into the first period. Sprung by Maltby on a breakaway pass, Heatley beat Brodeur waist-high on the stick side (RB7,GR7). Four minutes later, it was Nick Boynton's turn, as the defenseman scored shorthanded for his first career playoff goal (RB3[Split 13], roll 4). Heatley very nearly scored a second shorthanded goal on the same power play (RB5[Split 1-10], roll 12) in what surely would have been the most disastrous man advantage in this year's playoffs. Heatley would eventually get his second of the game, however, scoring on yet another breakaway (RB7,GR8,Split 16) to produce the eventual three-goal margin of victory. "It felt really good," said Heatley, who still has a residence in his boyhood hometown of Calgary. When asked about the different role he was asked to play tonight, he smiled. "That's the great thing about our lineup - every night, we know that we're going to get an honest effort from all twenty guys in the game. It's a pleasure playing with any of them." The series, which has been played entirely through NetMeeting, will now return to Alberta for Game Six on Sunday. After being lambasted for his constant line shuffling in Games Three and Four, coach Doug Norris was noncommittal. "My job is to get my players the best-possible matchups. And with the roster the Hawks have, it's a difficult job. We'll have some surprises in store, to be sure." "We've still got a long road ahead of us, but it's got to come one game at a time," said captain Chris Drury. "We've won three games in a row lots of times during the year, and now it's just two games to win. STARBUCKS THREE STARS OF THE GAME: 1. Dany Heatley, Seattle - two goals, assist 2. Kirk Maltby, Seattle - two assists, solid defense on Langenbrunner 3. Jean-Sebastien Giguere, Seattle - twenty-nine saves, shutout, 1/1 GR RAINIERS NOTES: * Sixteen separate Rainier players have scored goals in this season's Farley Cup playoffs. Among them are Tyler Wright, Mike Keane, and Marcus Ragnarsson. Not among them is sixth-year forward Patrick Marleau, who - although he is second on the team in playoff points - has yet to find the back of the net in Seattle's ten postseason games. "I know that the goals will start coming," said Marleau in the locker room after Game Five. "With teammates like I've got, I've just got to keep going to the net and taking care of the rebounds. I'm going great in practice; maybe coach needs to sit me out in the morning skate tomorrow so that I can synch up again." The Rainiers certainly wouldn't mind Marleau breaking out in a big way for Game Six. * Jean-Sebastien Giguere has been touted for both the Gretzky and Sawchuk Trophies this year, after posting a 43-19-8 record with a 2.20 goals-against average, 92.7% save percentage and nine shutouts. But the Rainiers' number-one goaltender knows that in the end, success is measured in the playoffs. To that end, perhaps his Game Five performance was his coming-out party? Having been pulled twice this spring in favour of backup Vesa Toskala, Giguere knows that now is the time that he needs to step things up. "Vesa and I have a good relationship, and we help each other. Obviously I like being the go-to guy, but the team's success is what matters." * Speaking of team success (or lack thereof), whatever happened to the vaunted Seattle Rainier power play? The club has just seven goals (in fifty attempts) with the man advantage, despite rolling along at more than a 20% clip (79 for 388) during the regular season. Part of the problem has to go to both the Hawks and the San Francisco penalty-killers, who both place speedy wingers on the points and emphasize an aggressive box system. "Our point men can't get the shots off, and are having trouble controlling play from the blueline," said Norris. Whether Norris - who regularly uses three forwards (Heatley, Chris Drury, Viktor Kozlov) on the point - will return to using defensemen on the blueline remains to be seen. * On the other hand, perhaps opponents will start turning down power plays against the Rainiers. In ten games, the club has only allowed a meager four goals, with Mike Fisher, Kirk Maltby, Jaroslav Spacek and Ed Jovanovski sparking a formerly-moribund penalty-killing squad. And the Rainiers have three goals themselves while shorthanded. A large measure of the credit can go to Norris' assistant coaches, Jacques Cloutier and Brian Skrudland. Cloutier has been with the club for three years, working with a much-improved defense corps that has mostly been developed from within. And Skrudland, who works with the forwards, was really the Rainiers' last great penalty killer before retiring in 2000.
