Another overtime Netmeeting game for the record book! Following the game it was offered that for game five the two teams start in overtime with the first goal winning the game. It would save time and provide just as much excitement. Despite the 11 goals, the story of the game was the goonish tactics of Vincent Damphousse. The veteran centerman abused Seattle by delivering cheapshots that made Kirk Maltby shiver. In addition to his two defensive takeaways, Damphousse was successful on two intimidation checks. His Strat-o-matic intimidation rating is a whopping one! Damphousse began the dirty assault as he watched Ed Jovanovski running roughshod on his smaller teammates. It started with an elbow to Ladislav Nagy's head and ended with him tripping Nagy during overtime. "Why should we take the abuse?" Damphousse offered after racking up six penalty minutes. "Some of the stuff that Maltby and Jovanovski were dishing out should have gotten them more penalties. It may sound selfish, but I decided to even things up. We've got to stick up for one another. There's nothing worse than giving up because of fear." The Hedgehogs scored the first goal of the game on a nifty move by Lasse Pirjeta. The winger working with Jon Klemm, swung to the side. Gathering the puck along the boards, he drilled it on net and found daylight over Giguere's shoulder [IS6:GR3]. Giving up the early lead, Seattle began to add more pressure. Attacking without mercy, they'd go on to score three goals before San Francisco pulled Kevin Weekes. The usually dependable goaltender was shaky, allowing Vikor Kozlov to score under his glove hand [IS5:GR7]. His five-hole was a bit too wide when Dany Heatley scored on a rebound [REB2:Goal]. And the third goal by Chris Drury had him turned in the wrong direction [IS5:GR5]. With the third goal scored just a minute after the second, out goes Weekes and in comes Sebastien Charpentier. The change in goaltenders must have sparked the team as Jaromir Jagr scored five minutes later. But the momentum would shift back to Seattle when Fisher and Jovanovski tallied a late second period goal and an early third period goal. San Francisco was in deep trouble. They're down 2-1 in the series and 5-2 in game four. Coach Norris would perform a Vinacci when he sent his fourth line out onto the ice halfway through the third in an effort to keep his players fresh. The Vinacci error cost him a goal and a change in the game. Sergei Zholtok scored his second of the series to pull the Hedgehogs within two [IS2:SP12:G16]. With momentum back on their side, San Francisco pressed on with the hope that they could pull even both in goals and games. Not giving up, Martin St. Louis potted the next two goals to force overtime. The first goal came from a lack of offensive pressure by Seattle. Hemmed in their own end, the San Francisco forwards skated circles around the tired Rainiers. In a dizzying display of offensive talent, St. Louis flew by the defense to put in a backhand shot [IS4:SP3:G5]. A few minutes later, St. Louis caught a fatiged power play napping. Breaking in all alone, the fiesty forward lifted another backhand over Giguere's shoulder [BKWY5:GR8]. Furious over the defensive breakdowns, the Rainiers pulled Giguere in favor of Vesa Toskala. The trick worked as Toskala would play perfectly through the rest of the game, stopping all 11 shots directed at him. Tired of seeing each other being pushed around, Seattle renewed their offensive attack in overtime. Keeping their top line of Drury, Marleau and Heatley out as much as possible, they'd eventually get the break they needed to put the game away. The Hedgehogs couldn't get back on their toes, not even Following a four on three power play. Rested and recovered from the flu, Drury's legs were still working late into the first overtime period. Extending out, he managed to deflect a pass by Dany Heatley. The tip-in goal was nearly caught, but the puck bounced off the heel of Charpentier's glove [IS5:GR8]. "It was great to get the goal," Drury said. "I'm just glad to have had an active role in the win. It was difficult to watch the team play game three without me." All wasn't serious as he wrapped up the interview with this comment, "And since each game is getting progressively longer, game five should last at least one full overtime period." 3 STARS ------- 1.
