What exactly are we doing when we prove mathematical statements? Are we demonstrating fundamental truths about the nature of reality? Are we simply engaging in a logical game with agreed upon rules? Or is something else entirely afoot? In this unsettlingly math-light talk, we will explore the basic schools of thought that govern the philosophical interpretations of mathematics, raise questions for which no definitive answers can be provided, and generally infringe upon another discipline’s academic turf for our own amusement. While pizza will be provided, the question of whether or not the truth of its delivery was encoded into logical statements concerning it prior to its arrival will remain unanswered.
