Feb. 10, 2015 11am (MATH 350)	Number Theory Rachel Pries (Colorado State University) X We study the relationship between the p-rank of a curve and the p-ranks of the Prym varieties of its cyclic covers in characteristic p >0. For all p and g, we generalize a result of Nakajima by proving that the Prym varieties of all unramified cyclic degree L covers of a generic curve X of genus g and p-rank f are ordinary. When p > 3, we prove that there exists a curve of genus g and p-rank f having an unramified degree 2 cover whose Prym is almost ordinary. Using work of Raynaud, we use these two theorems to prove results about the (non)-intersection of the L-torsion group scheme with the theta divisor of the Jacobian of a generic curve X of genus g and p-rank f. Despite being overwhelmingly more numerous than algebraic numbers, it is not so easy to find them in Nature: we know, for example, that pi is transcendental, but proving this is a major result. We will discuss these facts, then go on to discuss the Kontsevich-Zagier theory that most transcendentals belong to a countable class, the periods of integrals of algebraic functions with rational coefficients. Feb. 10, 2015 2pm (MATH 350)	Lie Theory Nat Thiem (CU) X This talk is an introduction to random walks on groups and some of the tools in representation theory used to study these walks. In particular, we will explore conditions under which a group's representation theory can still be used to study clumped variants of the group walk. At the heart of this talk is a family of unipotent groups, whose walks have a wide variety of flavors, including walks on positive integers, hypercubes, bounded partitions and more. Feb. 10, 2015 3pm (Math 220)	Functional Analysis Judith Packer (University of Colorado, Boulder) X We review the quantum Heisenberg manifolds of M. Rieffel, who originally defined them as generalized fixed point algebras. These are shown to be twisted groupoid algebras as first defined by A. Kumjian. This is joint work with S. Kang and A.
